GEORGE BURNETT LEISURE CENTRE

Public BBQ

The George Burnett Leisure Centre sits like a well-kept secret behind its modest facade, though the constant stream of families with bikes and basketballs rather gives the game away. The pump track out back has become something of a local phenomenon – a flowing circuit of hills and turns that seems to attract every child within a ten-kilometre radius. Despite the crowds, there's an oddly civilised queue system that works, perhaps because Australian kids are inherently reasonable about sharing their fun. The facilities themselves are refreshingly straightforward: proper toilets, covered seating that actually provides shade, and a water fountain that works. The adjacent skate park adds to the controlled chaos, creating a sort of wheeled wonderland that keeps youngsters occupied for hours. Inside, the courts are bright and well-maintained, with that new-floor smell that suggests recent investment. The staff manage to be both friendly and professional – a combination rarer than one might expect.
